Filho do dono de loja de artigos de couro e de uma professora, Fields iniciou os estudos em escolas p\u00fablicas de sua cidade natal, tendo sempre destaque na Matem\u00e1tica, que lhe garantiram inclusive uma medalha de ouro pelo m\u00e9rito na disciplina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduou-se em Matem\u00e1tica na Universidade de Toronto em 1884. Concluiu o doutorado na Universidade Johns Hopkins (EUA), em 1887, onde permaneceu por dois anos como professor desta institui\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desiludido com a situa\u00e7\u00e3o da pesquisa matem\u00e1tica na Am\u00e9rica do Norte, seguiu para a Europa em 1891, estabelecendo-se inicialmente em Berlim, G\u00f6ttingen e Paris, onde se associou com alguns dos maiores matem\u00e1ticos do seu tempo, como Karl Weierstrass, Felix Klein, Ferdinand Georg Frobenius e Max Planck. Foi nesse per\u00edodo tamb\u00e9m que Fields iniciou uma amizade duradoura com Magnus G\u00f6sta Mittag-Leffler e come\u00e7ou a publicar artigos sobre um novo t\u00f3pico \u2014 fun\u00e7\u00f5es alg\u00e9bricas \u2014, que viria a ser o campo mais prof\u00edcuo de sua carreira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\">\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- Banner-728x90 -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8479963969486292\" data-ad-slot=\"1093331068\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>De volta ao Canad\u00e1 em 1901 para um curso na Universidade de Toronto, Fields trabalhou arduamente para elevar o n\u00edvel matem\u00e1tico no pa\u00eds. Foi eleito presidente do Royal Canadian Institute (1919-1925) e respons\u00e1vel direto por Toronto sediar o Congresso Internacional de Matem\u00e1ticos de 1924. Dedicou-se tanto a essa tarefa que acabou desenvolvendo problemas card\u00edacos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idealizador da Medalha Fields desde o final da d\u00e9cada de 1920, n\u00e3o chegou a vivenciar a concretiza\u00e7\u00e3o da condecora\u00e7\u00e3o. Morreu aos 69 anos, em 9 de agosto de 1932, v\u00edtima de um acidente vascular cerebral. Por\u00e9m, no leito de morte fez com que o colega irland\u00eas John Lighton Synge garantisse que seu testamento destinasse 47 mil d\u00f3lares para os fundos da Medalha Fields. Al\u00e9m da Medalha Fields, ele recebeu diversas outras honrarias, como a Legi\u00e3o de Honra da Fran\u00e7a, ao lado da enfermeira francesa do M\u00e9dicos Sem Fronteiras que sobreviveu ao ebola, o escritor Patrick Modiano e o economista Thomas Piketty.[6] Vive, atualmente, entre o Rio de Janeiro e a Fran\u00e7a e possui contribui\u00e7\u00f5es em diversas \u00e1reas, sendo sua principal \u00e1rea de atua\u00e7\u00e3o sistemas din\u00e2micos.
